It’s one thing to know African greys live a long time, and another to actually plan for it. A well-cared-for grey commonly reaches 40 to 60 years old, which changes the kind of decision this is.

What a multi-decade commitment actually involves

Unlike a shorter-lived pet, a grey will likely go through multiple stages of your life with you — job changes, moves, relationship changes, possibly children, and eventually old age on your side of the relationship too. Its care needs (diet, enrichment, social time) don’t reduce over that time; if anything, an aging bird may need more accommodation, not less.

The question few buyers ask: what happens if you can’t keep the bird

Because greys so often outlive their original owner or an owner’s circumstances, having a plan matters. Consider in advance: who would take the bird if something happened to you, and does that person understand the commitment. Reputable breeders and rescue organizations are often willing to take a bird back or help rehome it responsibly — ask about this before you buy, not after a crisis.
