How to Read Your African Grey’s Body Language

African greys are famous for their voices, but most of what they communicate happens without a sound. Feathers, eyes, posture, and stance all carry meaning — learning to read them makes handling calmer and safer for both of you.

Feathers

Slightly fluffed feathers on a relaxed bird usually mean contentment. A tight, sleeked-down posture often signals alertness or unease. Feathers pinned flat with the bird leaning away is a clearer warning sign to give space.

Eyes

Greys “pin” their eyes — rapidly widening and narrowing the pupils — when they’re excited, focused, or worked up, whether that’s from delight or irritation. Read it alongside the rest of the body rather than on its own.

Posture and stance

A bird standing tall with feathers smooth is usually confident and curious. A lowered body, raised wings, or a fanned tail can signal that it’s feeling defensive or cornered. Beak grinding at rest is typically a sign of a calm, settling-down bird — not distress.
