What Is a DNA Certificate, and Why Does It Matter When Buying a Parrot?

Unlike many bird species, male and female African greys look essentially identical. There’s no reliable visual way to tell them apart, which is where DNA sexing comes in.

How DNA sexing works

A small blood sample or a few feathers are sent to a lab, which analyzes specific chromosome markers to determine sex. The result comes back as a certificate with a reference number, tied to that specific bird.

Why it matters to a buyer

• It’s the only reliable answer. Behavior, color, and size are not accurate ways to guess a grey’s sex, whatever folklore says otherwise.
• It matters for future planning, particularly if you’re considering a second bird later or have any interest in breeding down the line.
• It’s a mark of a careful breeder. DNA sexing costs money and takes time to arrange; a listing that skips it, or can’t produce a certificate, is cutting a real corner.

What to check

Ask for the lab name and the certificate reference number, not just a verbal claim of “male” or “female.” A genuine certificate can be verified with the lab if you have any doubt.
